You don’t need a theme. I would use centerpieces that compliment your reception site, but I would not make it “gimicky”
I would just pick my favorite type of flowers or a flower that is in season for the time.
If you don’t want flower centerpieces, do just candles—pillars, votive, etc.
If you want the color blue you could use varying shades or maybe try violet or periwinkle, which have a touch of purple to them. Yellow works well with blue too. I don’t think the marine idea is bad for September since it is the earlier part but I would definitely go with the outside option somewhere next to water. Floating candles with blue rocks or maybe blue sand at the bottom of a glass centerpiece with water and floating candles would be pretty. Congratulations by the way!
Blue is a wonderful color because almost every color will go with it.If you are having a marine theme like a water theme. Then you could with something like a floating candle in a glass bowl with rocks at the bottom in your wedding colors. A store like Michel’s crafts will have tons of glass bowls in all shapes and sizes. then you can do candles in a shape that matches the theme. going to someplace like Michel’s or hobby lobby you can do the centerpieces for about 1.50 to 3.00 dollars each.Depending on where you live i would say have it out side but you never know what the weather will be
Good luck
It’s ok, I’m ahead of the planning too
I like the marine theme idea (though I’d probably call it “underwater” rather than marine). You could pair it with different shades of blues, teals, and greens. For your centerpieces you can have huge vases with submerged flowers (white flowers would look nice). When flowers are underwater they continue to “breathe” and get coated with air bubbles (it looks really cool).
I’d probably have the ceremony outside, since the weather is really nice in September, and the reception inside. If you have the reception inside you can spend more money on decorating (and theme-ing it up LOL) with your marine theme. It’d be hard to do a marine theme outside.
Bottom line though, this is your wedding and whatever you want to do (traditional or not) do it!
Good luck
What would offset the uniform nicely are shades of blue. I love getting color inspirations from floral arrangements. Pale blue looks lovely with white, cream, silver and green.

you know what looks great for a marine theme? Take a mirror and glue shells around the edge and put candles on it. Cheap and looks great. A lot of times, you can get a lot of shells on ebay cheap. Wedding supplies is a deal on ebay, I got a ton of stuff on there.
You could try renting a boat. Dinner cruise boats often have all inclusive packages where you can have the whole wedding, food, dj, and a decent price.
